When should your child start preschool?

Most Massachusetts preschools take children from 2 years 9 months. But the right moment depends less on the calendar and more on your child. Here is what to weigh, and what an earlier Montessori start looks like.

The short answer

In Massachusetts, 2.9 is the usual entry point because that is where preschool licensing groups begin. Most families start their child between 2.9 and 3.5, either in September or mid-year when a spot opens. If your child turns three in the winter, both paths work; the deciding factor is usually whether a classroom has room.

Signs your child is ready

  • They notice and gravitate toward other children
  • They can spend a few hours away from you without distress
  • They follow simple, familiar directions
  • They seem restless or under-challenged in their current routine
  • They want to do things themselves, even when it is slower

No child checks every box. Readiness also grows fast in the right environment, which is why schools look at the whole child rather than a list.

Starting earlier: the toddler option

You do not have to wait for 2.9. Montessori schools run toddler classrooms from well before the preschool cutoff; at Beacon the Toddler program begins at 15 months. The room is designed for this age: low shelves, real but child-sized tools, and a small group with consistent adults. Children who start as toddlers also move up to the Primary classroom already at home in the school.

September or mid-year?

September is the natural rhythm, and most spots turn over then. Mid-year entry depends on openings, but it has a quiet advantage: your child joins a classroom that is already settled, and gets more adult attention in the first weeks. If the fall is full, ask to be contacted when something opens rather than waiting for the next cycle.

If your child does not seem ready

Visit anyway. A good school will tell you honestly whether to start now or wait a few months, and what would help in the meantime. Our own admissions process includes a visit with your child before any decision, so you are not guessing from a brochure. You can also compare approaches first in our guide to Montessori vs. daycare.

Common questions

What age do children start preschool in Massachusetts?

Most Massachusetts preschools accept children from 2 years 9 months, so the common starting window is 2.9 to 3.5. Montessori schools also run toddler programs that begin much earlier; at Beacon, from 15 months.

Does my child need to be potty trained to start?

Policies vary by school and by age group. Montessori toddler programs generally treat toilet learning as part of the day's work rather than a prerequisite. Ask each school you tour; we are glad to explain how we handle it.

Can my child start in the middle of the year?

Often yes, when a classroom has an opening. A mid-year start can even be gentler, since your child joins a settled class. You can inquire at any time of year and we will tell you honestly what is open.

Is 15 months too early for school?

A toddler classroom is not a scaled-down preschool. The room, the materials, and the pace are built for children who are just learning to walk, talk, and do things for themselves, in a small group with consistent adults.
