How much does preschool cost in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts is one of the most expensive states in the country for child care. Most national cost surveys put it second only to Washington, D.C. For a preschool-age child (2.9 to 5 years), full-day center programs commonly run $1,400 to $2,200 a month statewide. In Greater Boston and the western suburbs, $2,000 to $3,000 a month is common, and some programs charge more. Half-day programs often land between $800 and $1,400 a month.

Care for children under three costs more, not less. Center-based infant and toddler care in Massachusetts frequently runs $2,200 to $2,800 a month, because the state requires more teachers per child at those ages. These are market ranges drawn from statewide cost surveys, not any one school’s rates, and the spread within a single town can be wide. Treat them as a starting point for comparison, not a quote.

Most of a preschool’s budget is people. Massachusetts licensing allows roughly one teacher for every four toddlers but one for every ten preschoolers, so a toddler seat simply costs more to staff. That is why prices usually drop when a child turns 2.9 and moves into a preschool classroom, and why schools that keep ratios tighter than the state minimum charge more than schools that run at the limit.

Hours are the second driver. A year-round program open 7:00 to 6:00 pays for far more staffed hours than a school-year program that ends at 3:00, and tuition reflects it. The rest is what you would expect: teacher pay and training, plus rent, which in towns like Weston and Wayland is a real part of every tuition bill. When two prices look far apart, check the hours and the ratios before deciding one school is overpriced.

Compare programs on price per hour, not price per month. Divide monthly tuition by the hours of care you actually get. A half-day program that charges 60 percent of the full-day price for 45 percent of the hours is the more expensive option per hour, and you still have to arrange the afternoon. For working parents, a half-day program plus a sitter usually costs more in total than one full-day program.

Also check what a year of tuition actually contains. Two schools can quote similar monthly numbers and deliver different amounts of care: one runs 38 weeks with every school vacation off, another runs 50. At most Massachusetts preschools, base tuition covers the classroom program, materials, and a snack. Beyond that, read carefully. Lunch is sometimes included and often not. Diapers and wipes for toddlers are usually the family’s to supply. Some schools bill an annual materials or supply fee on top of tuition; others fold it in. Enrichment classes, extended day, and summer weeks are frequently priced separately.

Ask every school for the full picture in writing: tuition plus every recurring and one-time fee. A quoted monthly rate is rarely the whole cost. Before you sign anything, ask:

• Is there an application or registration fee, and does it apply toward tuition?
• Is the deposit refundable if our plans change before the start date?
• How many weeks of care does the annual tuition actually buy?
• Is summer included, optional, or billed as a separate program?
• What does late pickup cost, and when does the clock start?
• How much did tuition increase in each of the last two years?
